Trip cancellation
Unlimited cover for cancellation of your holiday due to an unexpected illness or injury.
Domestic travel insurance is a policy that provides cover for travel to Australian states, territories and islands within its maritime borders. It can provide cover for cancellation due to illness or injury, lost, stolen or damaged luggage, cancelled flights, rental vehicle insurance excess, personal liability and other unexpected circumstances.
As you’ll be travelling within Australia, your health expenses are already covered by Medicare or your private health insurance. But if an injury or sickness does occur prior to your trip which results in you needing to cancel your trip, you’ll have cancellation cover.
Besides, illness or an injury affecting your holiday, there are still things that can and do go wrong and it’s better to be prepared for any unexpected situations which could turn a dream local holiday into a nightmare.
So travel insurance can certainly cover domestic travel with Australia.
You can get domestic insurance for a wide range of benefits so you can embrace the opportunities that are available to you when travelling around Australia including skiing, hiking, diving and driving!
If you’re travelling domestically within Australia, you should consider a policy that provides 24-hour emergency assistance as well as cover for what’s most important to you.

See the table below for more information about what's included under each benefit.
The table below is only a summary of benefits. Each level of cover is subject to full policy terms, conditions, limits, sub-limits, and exclusions as per our PDS available on our website. Benefit limits shown apply per person for both Singles and Duo policies. # These benefit limits are shared between Duo policy holders. ~ These benefit limits are shared between travellers under a Family policy. This means the benefit amount is for the whole family to be used together, not for each person separately. ^ Cover under these benefits are excluded while travelling within Australia. If you hold a Frequent Traveller Saver policy, the benefit limits apply to the combined total of all claims made by all covered travellers (including an accompanying spouse/partner and dependants) listed on the Certificate of Insurance.

Even though you're covered by Medicare or your private health insurer for medical expenses in Australia, a domestic travel insurance policy can provide cover for a wide variety of different situations.
Australia is a large and diverse country with a wide range of sights and experiences to offer. Whether you plan to travel to see the Blue Mountains, get a taste of Tasmania or dive at the Great Barrier Reef in far-north Queensland, you should make sure you have domestic travel insurance to provide protection for you and your family during your holiday.
Insurance does NOT cover any medical expenses when you are travelling within Australia. When you are in Australia, any medical costs would need to be covered by Medicare, your private health insurance or out of your own pocket.
It is actually legislated by the Australian Government that travel insurance companies are unable to provide cover for medical expenses within Australia for Australian residents and citizens, who are eligible for Australian Medicare. The intention is for any medical costs to remain under Medicare or Private Health.
Please note that ambulance services are state run services and Medicare does not necessarily cover you for ambulance trips.
Whilst a domestic travel insurance policy does not provide cover for medical expenses, it can provide cover for Cancellation due to a medical situation.
If a family had bought a Domestic Plus policy to cover a family holiday to the Gold Coast during the September school holidays with activities including theme parks, going to the beach and hiking. And two days before the family was due to depart on a flight from Sydney to the Gold Coast, one of the children broke his leg whilst riding a skateboard that required surgery to reset the leg that meant they needed to cancel the holiday.
In this instance, the costs of the surgery would be covered by Medicare and their private health insurance policy and not their domestic policy.
However, the cost for any flight, hotel or theme park tickets that cannot be refunded may be claimed, as a result of the medical incident.
But don’t think that travelling domestically that you’ll always be covered for every eventuality. There are plenty of other non-medical situations that can affect your holiday.
Points 1 & 2 above is general advice only and is not intended to replace the advice from a medical practitioner or health care professional.
There are a number of places that are in the Pacific but NOT covered by a Domestic policy.
For the below destinations, you would need to buy a Pacific region policy.
For the below locations, which can be considered Australian Territories, select a Worldwide region policy.
Within Australia’s maritime borders, there are 8,222 islands, some of these are off the coast of the Australian mainland like Norfolk Island or Tasmania such as Bruny Island or within the rivers and harbours like Fort Denison in Sydney Harbour.
If you are travelling by land (car, bus, rail etc) or air (flying) to these states or islands, select a ‘Domestic Region’ policy. If you are travelling to any of these locations by sea on a cruise, you will need to select cruise travel insurance to ensure you have appropriate cover.
Norfolk Island changed to being a domestic territory of Australia on the 1st July 2016, so purchasing a domestic policy will provide the cover if you are flying. If you are travelling to Norfolk Island by boat, you will need to purchase a cruise policy.
Cruises are increasingly popular among Australians of all ages. Many choose international destinations, but there are also many great cruise options closer to home around Australia and the Pacific Islands.
A lot of travellers don't realise this, but even if your cruise remains in domestic waters, your private health insurance and Medicare are unlikely to provide medical cover as soon as you board the ship.
Medicare will only cover you if the doctor onboard is registered with Medicare. In the majority of cases, this is unlikely to be the case, so if you became sick or injured whilst cruising, you may find yourself out of pocket for the full cost of medical treatment.
Being out at sea also means that if you needed urgent medical treatment for a broken bone or a serious illness, you would have to be evacuated from the ship by helicopter or boat to the nearest land hospital, costing upwards of $20,000 AUD.
A medical evacuation can be very expensive and would also be at your own expense unless you’re covered by travel insurance with medical evacuation cover included.
For these reasons, cruise companies recommend cruise travel insurance for all travellers, regardless of where your cruise is going or whether or not it’s leaving Australian waters.
Our domestic policies include cover of up to $5000 for Rental Vehicle Insurance Excess. We do not directly provide cover for any damage to the car, van or campervan that you are hiring. Travel insurance is not mandatory, so you do not necessarily need it and you can fly without travel insurance domestically.
